Nachtschicht

Nachtschicht
Hinter einer Scheibe
aus Panzerglas
da sitz ich
das Haus ist leer
und ich alleine
ich soll hier wachen
ich soll behüten
dafür bin ich zu mieten
geh auf Streife
bei Gefahr
hab ich meine Pfeife
ernsthaften Widerstand
soll ich doch nicht leisten
denn weder Gut noch Gold
sind in diesem Haus gelagert
kommt ein Dieb
der in Not
vor Hunger halbtot
und menschlich abgemagert
streicht durch leere Korridore
Teeküchen und Kontore
wird nichts finden
als sich und seine Schritte
Jetzt ist Nachtschicht
ich bin der Nachtportier in
dieser Nachtschicht
Ich lass ihn suchen
um Ecken huschen
er soll es selbst erkennen
mir würde er nicht glauben
weiter rennen
ich wäre froh
wenn er etwas zu rauben
finden wärde
ich würde ihn gewähren lassen
Türen heimlich öffnen
Fingerzeige geben
am liebsten tragen, mitanfassen
kein Schäferhund
keine Alarmanlage und nur ich –
der Nachtportier
der gähnt
In der Nachtschicht
ich bin der Nachtportier
dieser Nachtschicht
Es gibt natürlich auch
reguläre Besucher
in der Welt meiner Arbeit
ich drücke auf den Summer
sie nicken, ich nicke
sie gehn hinein
und kehren, geradlinig wie sie sind
niemals wieder
und das auch noch beruflich
ich finde das verdächtig
Doch ich bin Nachtportier
kann mich eh nicht erinnern
wie sie aussehn
hab sie nur einmal, beim Vorbeigehn
wenn sie ziemlich schnell und anonym
an mir vorübergehn, gesehn
sie kommen rein
als Ausweis ihre Haltung
sind sie vorbei
les ich weiter Zeitung
Was mir gefällt
an meinem Job?
Er hat auch seine guten Seiten
schlichte Arbeit
treue Liebe
bei zufriedenem Brot
doch ist er wirklich
nur für Leute
die die Stille und die Leere
dieses grossen Hauses
und seinen grossen alten Namen
lieben können
andre halten es nicht lange aus.
Klar, Nachtschicht
will ich nicht ewig machen
irgendwann will auch ich beim Erwachen
Tageslicht erblicken
und meinen Hund
den ich dann besitze
zum Zeitungsholen schicken.
Doch jetzt...
Platz ist da für alle
in diesem großen Haus
es gehn viel mehr Leute rein
als wieder raus
doch zähl ich sie nicht
weiss auch nicht
was am Tag ist
hab eh nur eine Pflicht
einen Auftrag
der überfordert mich nicht
ich muss mich um den Reisswolf kümmern
was heisst kümmern
er läuft ja von allein
es reicht
wenn ich höre
wie er frisst
das einzige Geräusch in diesem Haus
das aber ständig ist
so dass man es vergisst
ich füttere ihn von dieser Rolle
auf die ich schreibe
mit der ich mir des Nachts
die Zeit vertreibe
als wäre diese Zeit
mein Feind

Night shift
Behind a pane
Made of bulletproof glass
There I sit
The house is empty
And I alone
I'm supposed
To keep watch here
I should protect
That's why I'm available
For hire
Go on patrol
In case of danger
I have my pipe
Serious resistance
Is not expected
For neither goods nor gold are
Stored in this house
Comes a thief
Who is in need
Half dead from hunger
And humanly emaciated
Prowls through empty corridors
Kitchenettes and bureaus
Won't find anything than himself
And his steps
It's night shift now
I am the
Night porter of this night shift
I let him search
Scurry around corners
He shall discover it himself
He wouldn't believe me
Would keep on running
I would be happy if he
Found something to rob
I would secretly open doors
Give pointers
Preferably help him carrying
No shepherd dog
No alarm system and only me –
The night porter who yawns
On the night shift
I'm the night porter
Of this night shift
Of course there are
Regular visitors
In the world of my work
I press the buzzer
They nod, I nod
Then they go in and
Straight as they are
Will never come back again
And they won't for professional reasons
To me that is suspicious
But I'm a night porter
Can't remember anyway
How they look
Have seen them only once
While going by fairly quick
And anonymously
They get in
As a pass their attitude
When they've passed
I keep reading the newspaper
What I like about my job?
It has its good points
Plain work
Faithful love
With happy bread
But it's only for those people
Who dig
The silence and the emptiness of
This big house
And its great old name
Others don't last long
Sure, night shift
I don't want
To do it forever
At some point
I also want to see daylight
When I wake up
And send my dog
Which I will own
to fetch the newspaper
But now...
There is space for everyone
In this big house
A lot more people go in
Than back out
But I don't count them
I do not know either
What is happening in the day
I have only one duty
One order
It doesn't overwhelm me
I have to take care of the
Shredder
What does care mean
It runs by itself
I only have to listen
How it eats
The only noise in this house
That is so constant
That you forget it
I feed it from this roll
On which I write
This way passing the time at
Night
As if this time is my enemy

(And then) Everything
03:35

(And then) Everything
Everything turned itself inside out
Nothing stood still
The taste went from nothing to something
The light went from on to off
Everybody woke up
Nobody opened their eyes
Everything came closer
Nothing moved ahead
The rocks turned from yellow to purple
The blackberries from sour to sweet
Everybody turned blue
Nobody would turn around
Everything stopped to trickle
Nothing started breathing
The wind went from harsh to soft
The water ran from the walls
Everybody reached out
Nobody would touch
Everything curdled from fluid to solid
Nothing expanded from here to there
The temperature went from something to nothing
The time turned from red to grey
Everybody fell asleep
Nobody whispered in their dreams
And then everything made a sound
Nothing shatters like glass
The fish travelled from deep to shallow
The light went from off to on
Everybody would hear the distance
Nobody could point the silence
